NSW: Showground ride operator fined over workplace death

A showground ride operator has been fined $29,000 and ordered to pay a double insurancepremium after a worker died cleaning a ride at Sydney's Royal Easter Show.

WorkCover New South Wales took the case to the state's Chief Industrial MagistratesCourt, claiming Brooks Crown Amusements breached health and safety codes and failed tohave insurance.

The case involved an accident at the Royal Easter Show at Homebush in March, 1999.

The court's been told the cleaner was working on the Turbo Ride when it started carryinghim 10 metres into the air.

He fell, suffering fatal injuries, when the emergency stop button was pressed.

Amusement ride operator KEVIN CYRIL BROOKS, who did not appear in court, pleaded guiltyto the breaches.

He's been fined $12,500 for the two safety breaches and $4,000 for failing to obtainworkers' compensation insurance.

The court's also ordered he pay double the avoided insurance premium of $998 and WorkCovercosts of $10,000.
